Deboodt Land and Livestock began in 1992 with the
purchase of five “Heinz 57” crossbred brood ewes that our 6 year old son
“purchased” from the neighbors up the road. Our son had been riding his
new two wheeler up to their place to watch lambs being born. He came
racing back down the lane, excitedly announcing “Mom! Dad! Vern and
Marilyn just sold me their sheep!!!” Um….. what? (The neighbors were
retiring and conveniently found a place for their 5 pasture pets!)
We had moved to Prineville, Oregon in 1987. Tim was the
new County Extension Agent. I was a stay at home mom until 1996 when I
began teaching elementary school. Fast forward a few decades and we are
still raising sheep (Southdowns, Club Lambs, and Katahdins) and cattle
(Shorthorn, Murray Gray, and Black Baldies). We have been blessed over
the years. Our oldest son was 2002 Oregon State FFA President. Our
“sheep” son was an Oregon State Fair Champion with his Hampshire Ram,
“Paco”, from Wise Hamps in Ohio. And our daughter showed the Southdowns
through 4H and FFA, and went on to become a three sport collegiate
athlete, achieving Volleyball Player of the Year in her college
conference.
Tim retired from Extension in 2018 on a Friday. The
following Monday he went back to work as the County’s Natural Resources
Coordinator. I retired from teaching in 2021, and can now enjoy lambing
and calving season without an alarm clock waking me up for work. (Except
I’m up 24-7 during that season anyway! LOL) We now enjoy the lively
antics of 5 grandchildren and 2 grand-dogs! |
